How to Become a Morning Person

Good morning, everyone!

Update: This post was originally written years before I had children.  Now, more than ever, I find that getting up early is crucial for me!  Having some time to myself before the kids wake up to have coffee while it’s hot, workout, work, or whatever I’d like to do, sets my day off really well.

How do you become a morning person?” 

This is an important question to answer.  Becoming a morning person can increase productivity in your day.  And this transition to earlier mornings may very well be on your list of New Year’s Resolutions!

Before we begin the tips, let me just say that Taylor and I are not naturally morning people.  We had to become that way!  And we used these tips :).  So, with that being said, if we can do it, you can do it!

1.    Find a motivating reason to wake up earlier

Find something to look forward to when you wake up!  That could be a new smoothie recipe you want to try, getting a workout in, or just having some non-rushed coffee time before the rest of your day begins.   Can we get a shout from our coffee lovers??

2.    Gradually get to your goal time

If your goal is to wake up at 6:00am and you usually get up at 7:30, try setting your alarm for 7:15, then 7:00, then 6:45 throughout the week…and so on.  The early wake-up call won’t be as alarming (hah!) if you gradually get used to it.

3.    Prepare

At night, write down everything on your to-do list so that you’re not stressing about what you need to do tomorrow as you fall asleep.  Also, pack your lunch and lay out your clothes for work or school the night before to streamline your morning.  And plan your workout!  (More on that in our next post and video!)

4.    Commit

Commit to waking up at the same time every day.  This will set your internal clock, making it easier to wake up at this time!  It will still be easier even on nights you don’t get as much sleep. Keep in mind, though, that if you wake up early on Monday-Friday but sleep until noon on the weekends, it’ll mess up your internal clock.

5.    Drink water/Exercise first thing in the morning

Drink some water first thing in the morning!  We recommend hot water with lemon, even before coffee!  Additionally, exercising first thing in the morning is going to help with energy, not hurt it.  (But more that in our next post and video, how to become a morning exerciser)

6.    Avoid caffeine post-lunch

It will mess with that internal clock that wants to wake you up at your goal time!  Don’t feel bad about ditching the caffeine late in the day, though.  You’ll get some quality time with it when you’re up the next morning!

7.    Don’t look at your computer/phone in your bed

It’s tempting to check your Instagram or your emails while getting to bed, but don’t!  It won’t help you fall asleep!

8.    Fake it till you make it!

Sometimes this is the best tip!  We know that mornings can be hard sometimes.  If your early morning self isn’t so chipper, fake it till you make it!  Mornings are my favorite part of the day, but I occasionally still do this!
